The power of the cross

The Power of the Cross - Gospel Sermon

The Power of the Cross

Scripture:

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." — Romans 5:8 (NKJV)

Introduction:

Today, we gather to reflect on the greatest act of love the world has ever known — the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. The cross is not just a symbol of suffering; it is the emblem of victory, love, and redemption.

The cross changed everything. It changed our destiny, our relationship with God, and our purpose in life.

1. The Cross Reveals God's Unfailing Love

  • God did not wait for us to be perfect before He showed His love.
  • While we were broken, rebellious, and lost, Christ came to rescue us.
  • The cross is the eternal evidence that no matter how far we stray, God's love is greater.

Key Point: Love is not just what God shows; love is who God is.

2. The Cross Breaks the Power of Sin

  • Before Christ, we were slaves to sin, guilt, and shame.
  • Through His death and resurrection, Jesus broke the chains that held us captive.
  • We are no longer condemned; we are forgiven, washed clean, and made new.

Scripture: "Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed." — John 8:36 (NKJV)

Key Point: Freedom from sin is not something we earn; it is a gift we receive.

3. The Cross Offers a New Life

  • The resurrection of Jesus proved that death is not the end.
  • Through the cross, we are invited into a new life — a life of purpose, hope, and eternal significance.
  • Our old life passes away; behold, all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Key Point: The cross is not just about forgiveness; it’s about transformation.

4. Our Response to the Cross

  • Accept the gift of salvation with gratitude.
  • Live a life that honors the sacrifice of Christ.
  • Share the good news with others so they too can experience the power of the cross.

Scripture: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." — Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)

Conclusion:

The cross stands at the center of history and at the center of our lives. It speaks of love that knows no limits, grace that cannot be measured, and victory that can never be undone.

Today, let us not only remember the cross — let us live by its power.

Prayer:

"Lord Jesus, thank You for the cross. Thank You for loving us when we were unworthy. Help us to walk in the freedom You purchased for us and to share Your love with a hurting world. In Jesus' name, Amen."
