Short Sermon: What I Learned from Phil Wickham's "Awesome God"

There are moments when a song comes along that doesn’t just sound good—it moves you. Phil Wickham’s song "Awesome God" is one of those songs that carries such depth, both musically and spiritually, that it’s impossible to listen to it without being stirred. Every time I hear it, I am reminded of the majesty of God and His sovereignty over everything. But what can we learn from this song that applies directly to our lives today?

Let’s take a deeper look at the lyrics and draw some profound lessons that can help us grow in faith and live a life that truly honors our awesome God.

1. God’s Majesty is Beyond Words

The song begins with the declaration:

"Our God is an awesome God, He reigns from heaven above, with wisdom, power, and love. Our God is an awesome God."

These words are simple, yet powerful. God’s majesty is not just a concept to ponder—it’s a truth that demands our reverence. The Bible tells us in Psalm 145:3:

"Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom."

God’s greatness is beyond measure, beyond our understanding. No matter how much we try to describe His greatness, His power, and His love, words will always fall short. Yet, God invites us to experience His majesty. Just like the song says, He reigns from heaven above, and it’s through His wisdom, power, and love that the world is sustained.

2. God Reigns Over All Circumstances

As the song continues, it reminds us of the sovereignty of God, stating that He reigns from heaven above. This is a powerful reminder for us in 2025. No matter what happens on earth, no matter the challenges, God is still in control.

Psalm 103:19 affirms this truth:

"The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all."

In our daily lives, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by circumstances—whether personal struggles, global issues, or even just the chaos of life. But the truth is, God reigns. And His reign is not passive; it’s active and filled with wisdom and love. When we live in the awareness of His sovereignty, we can face any situation with confidence, knowing that He is ultimately in control.

3. The Power of God is Unstoppable

The next lesson from the song is found in its celebration of God's power. "With wisdom, power, and love, our God is an awesome God." These three attributes highlight how God’s power is not just in His ability to create and sustain the universe but also in His ability to guide, protect, and transform lives.

In Jeremiah 32:17, it says:

"Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you."

Nothing is too difficult for God. The challenges we face are nothing compared to His unstoppable power. When we face trials, we must remind ourselves of the power of our God. We serve a God who can make a way where there seems to be no way, who can heal, restore, and deliver us from any situation. This truth should give us both confidence and hope.

4. God’s Love is Beyond Compare

The song ends with the truth that God’s love is unfathomable—it’s so deep that it drove Him to the cross for us. In Romans 5:8, we are reminded of the depths of God’s love:

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

God’s love isn’t a fleeting feeling—it’s a sacrificial, unconditional love that moves mountains. This is what sets our God apart from all other gods: His love is relentless. It pursues us, it forgives us, and it transforms us.

Phil Wickham's song calls us to worship in response to this love. When we understand the depth of God's love for us, it compels us to live with gratitude, honor, and devotion to Him.

5. Living in Awe of Our Awesome God

The most powerful takeaway from "Awesome God" is the call to live in awe of our Creator. To worship Him not just with our words but with our lives. When we truly grasp the magnificence of God, it should change us. It should inspire us to live with purpose, to act with love, and to trust Him completely.

In Psalm 96:9, we are called to:

“Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.”

Living in awe means recognizing God’s greatness in every part of our lives—whether we’re at work, in our families, or alone in prayer. It’s seeing His beauty and glory in all things and allowing that awareness to shape our decisions and actions.

Conclusion: A Call to Worship and Live Boldly

Phil Wickham’s "Awesome God" is not just a song—it’s a call to worship and reflect on God’s greatness, His power, and His love. It’s an invitation to live boldly and confidently, knowing that our awesome God is with us every step of the way. He reigns, He loves, and He is more than able to handle anything we face.

So, as we listen to this song, let it stir our hearts to live with reverence and awe, to share the truth of God’s power with others, and to live boldly in the knowledge that we serve a God who is awesome in every way.

Reflection Questions:

What part of God’s majesty and power inspires you the most?

How can you live in a greater awareness of God’s sovereignty over your life today?

In what ways can you respond to God’s love with worship and obedience?
